Holger Becker, And The Offending Foil Sandwiches
Holger Becker, And The Offending Foil Sandwiches

.... are not new to this blog, although I can't recall in which particular post it has been mentioned, but I do recall it being mentioned.

So, in this respect this won't be a unique tale. In September 2023 it was reported that on a stretch of the B184 between and in the villages of Konisberg and Heyrothsberge in Germany, someone was throwing foil-wrapped home-made sandwiches (the sarnies of the post title) - what the Germans call “Butterbrot” - on to the pavements, or into peoples front gardens before 6am almost every morning, but on weekdays only.

Witnesses said it was the same person, but no one had capture a number plate. The contents of the phantoms sandwiches varied from cheese, salami through to liver sausage and many were unopened, but they are sometimes half unwrapped with a bite or two taken out.

Holger Becker, chairman of the club Union Heyrothsberge, noted the volunteers helping the football team have added workload thanks to the motorist, “We do everything here on a voluntary basis and maintain our place ourselves,” he said. “It’s very annoying for us.”He also told the press: "I have no idea why they’re doing this."

Thomas Wilk, who lives along the road in Königsborn, told German publication Bild: "Why does he let someone make sandwiches if he doesn’t want to eat them?" .... but a local psychologist, Anke Precht, told Bild news, that it was possible the driver received the sandwich from someone else, perhaps a loved one, though they actually did not enjoy the snack. The driver might have missed the chance to tell the other person they did not like the sandwich, and now they have to live with the consequences of that misunderstanding.

Point of Law: Throwing rubbish out of a moving car is actually a crime in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Which means that, if ever found, the anonymous driver could face a fine of up to €400.

Sadly, despite me waiting a while, there were no reports of the culprit being caught, or maybe the publicity persuaded the culprit to dispose of the unwanted sandwiches when they got to their destination .... hopefully a waste bin.
