The recent Russian Plague story, where all the hallmarks of a major panic developed rather quickly ....

| The Soviets Emphasised Secrecy |
.... particularly amongst the neighbouring states of Russia, are all because of Soviet/Communist secrecy.
I say 'Soviet/Communist' in relation to Russia because it has all but returned to the Soviet model in all but name. Secret denouncing of neighbours is encouraged by the state, journalists arrested or assassinated, independent news media banned or closed down, long prison sentences for dissidents and or former political opponents, and even a return to Soviet style awards or orders of merit. They even now use the Soviet national anthem in place of the Russian Federation anthem.
So the same Soviet style paranoia and secrecy prevails on admitting internal incidents e.g for this incident there were large similarities with the early days of the Chernobyl disaster (or even Covid in communist China). Then, only when it was impossible to deny the incidents, after they were reported abroad, that official confirmations was given by both the Soviet and Chinese Communist regimes.
Have we been seeing Putin's Chernobyl moment? Have researchers in a state laboratory, buried deep in Siberia, accidentally allowed a deadly plague virus to escape via an infected worker? Were we about to be plunged into a new Middle age style Black Death scenario, but they got lucky and contained it?
Who knows, because Russia was furiously down playing the incident, even as its neighbours and allies started to panic, but as long as secrecy was retained, that appeared to be the main driver of ex-KGB officer Putin's regime.

Moderation is on for older posts to stop spamming and comments that are off topic or inappropriate from being posted .... comments are reviewed within 48 hours. I don't block normal comments that are on topic and not inappropriate. Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.
