Weddings can apparently be boring .....

..... well, in the view of Texas county Commissioner, Michael Gardner of Odessa, Texas.
So, he did what we would all do when we are losing an audience during a wedding in Denton in south-eastern Nebraska that he was officiating. Yes, we would pull a gun out and shoot it into the air during the wedding ceremony. However as he pulled his pistol out it slipped and fired into the witnesses and attendees ..... it shot a 12 year old boy (his grandson) in the shoulder.“I really don’t know exactly what happened,” Gardner told the press from Beatrice, Nebraska, where he’d been staying since the incident. “I’ve been around guns all my life, and I’ve never had anything like this happen.”
“The gun was scripted into the wedding,” Gardner explained. “The gun was fired to signal the music to start and for the bride to start her march down the aisle.”
Luckily for the child, the gun was only loaded with 'home-made' blanks (safety concious to the last) and so he wasn't seriously injured, but he still needed stitches before he was released from the hospital he was taken to. He made a full recovery. Unluckily for Mr Gardner he was still facing possible criminal charges for felony count of second-degree assault, but he pleaded no contest to the reduced misdemeanour charge in July. Prison is usually reserved for intentional abuse resulting in injury, and eventually he was only sentenced to spend one year on probation for the misdemeanour charge.
“It’s something I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life," said Gardner, who was recently re-elected as a county commissioner in Ector County in Texas. Those with felony convictions are ineligible to hold the office so the lack of any serious charge saved his political career.
