The UK pet charity Blue Cross ran a survey on psychic pets.
.... predictably given the sort of people who would have taken part in the poll, a large number believe that their pet is actively psychic. In fact 29 per cent believe that their pet has either seen or sensed a ghostly entity.
But better than that, 43 per cent of that 29 per cent of pet owners, believe that their pet tried to warn them of its presence, by barking, hissing or spitting at the entity. Of course as usual with these harmless light stories, a bit of digging and you uncover some strange facts.
An academic, vetinary Dr Rupert Sheldrake, has collected over 5,000 case histories involving psychic phenomena in animals. This includes at least 177 cases of dogs apparently reacting psychically to the death or suffering of their absent owners, and 62 accounts of cats reportedly showing similar signs of distress when their owner was killed or injured out of their sight.
In another instance, many people report that their pet knows when a family member is coming home (59 per cent of dog owners and 30 per cent of cat owners), or that many cats seem to know, for example, when they are going to be taken to the vet’s, and will hide in the hope that their owners might get bored of looking for them and give up on the idea. I have to add that when we had to de-flea one cat, she would always make herself scarce, even though it was an irregular event.
In a well reported case, in 1971 parapsychologist Robert Morris, took a dog, a cat, a white rat and a rattlesnake to a house where there had been a murder.
In the murder room, the dog came in just two feet before snarling and backing out of the door and refusing to re-enter, despite its owners urgings. The cat was carried into the room, and at the same two foot point, it leapt up on to her owner and then jumped to the floor and faced herself towards an empty chair, hissing and spitting at the chair for several minutes until taken out. The rattlesnake immediately assumed an attack posture, whilst focusing on the same chair when taken in to the room, while Mr Rat gave no discernible reaction when released. None of the animals reacted in any other room in the house..
Then of course there are also the real whacko's .... people who believe that they are psychically attuned to animals and can communicate with them alive or dead .... they usually sell this service for between £10($13.5) - £15 ($20) a session, describing themselves as Pet Psychic's. One even runs her own radio call in talk show, with callers able to ask questions to be put to their pet by the pet psychic.
Happily they sometimes get exposed as the frauds that they are.
