The Labour Parties main reason for existence is the support and prosecution of the working classes interests. In order to achieve power it requires the support of some proportion of the middle classes who feel able to support those working class wishes.
It came into power in 1997, because it was perceived by some of the middle classes that the wealth that they had accrued in the Thatcher decades should be spread into the National Health Services and other social programs.
However a decade of New Labour polices has produced no appreciable increase in the NHS and other social policies, and indeed by many indicators, Britain is a worse place than it was before Tony Blair swept into power. Certainly the massive debt that this government has taken on, in order to pursue with messianic zeal its polices of social manipulation, has shaken those of the middle classes who had supported the aims of New Labour.
This is in itself might not be too damaging for the party, who hold a commanding majority in the House of Commons, but their policies have damaged the aspiring manual classes, who not being dependent upon welfare and benefits, see their dreams being taken away by polices that are either senseless class war vendettas or damaging to them and theirs.
The attacks on fox hunting for example, were of no interest to them, but the non stop attacks on cigarette smoking and now alcohol, are issues that the typical labour core voter is not happy about. It's also without a doubt that, the open door policies of mass third world immigration has deeply frightened the working class votes, who find social housing simply given away to African or Asian immigrants on a "most need basis", rather than based on local waiting lists.
It's also no secret that many in the Labour Party deeply fear the rise of the BNP, but are unwilling to admit that its their own core inner city voters who are turning to the far right, not the Tory voters who don't live in these areas. Hazel Blears and others in constituencies similar to Salford, have been warning of this rise in BNP support for some time, but of course PC "new think" prevents them from stating which policies are causing the problems, so they have to waffle on about meeting voters concerns without explicitly stating what the voter concerns really are.
They certainly can't criticise those who vote for the far right parties, because they want them to come back to Labour without being named and shamed.
This all being true, you would consider that they would be doing everything possible not to further antagonise the voters that they need to stave off a massacre in next years elections, so this story about at least 1.5 million (and another government report states 5 million!) people being taxed out of flying next year, when Gordon Browns latest "Green taxes" (aka trying to plug the financial black hole) kick into full force, is surprising.
A former Labour minister Brian Wilson, has accused the Government of effectively rationing flights for all but the well off. Now chairman of the aviation lobby group Flying Matters, he said: “These figures show how millions of ordinary families will be priced out of flying by these taxes. There is no justification for such a regressive measure. Returning air travel to the preserve of a wealthy elite is likely to go down like a lead balloon with the electorate.”
It's obvious that the Labour Party tacticians have still not been able to openly spell out the dangers inherent, in making those on lower incomes detest the party and that they have to change tack on several fronts .... making air travel once again the preserve of the wealthy (and politicians), in order to allow the Government a little extra revenue, and make a reduction in CO2 emissions that is insignificant compared to the massive increases in other countries building huge new coal power plants almost weekly is just election suicide.
All sections of UK society expect to be able to travel abroad, to take that away by yet another stealth tax will simply ensure that the Labour Party will have managed to alienate and impoverish, the very proletariat (including the welfare lumpenproletariat) who were the cause of its birth.
Are we at that start of its death?
