Waiting For Waiters

There is an Indian restaurant looking for staff somewhere near you as I write this ....

The Cloves Indian Restaurant Help Wanted
Help Wanted .... Every Now And Then.

.... Trouble is, so are the the immigration enforcement section. The reason .... the restaurants continue to offer illegal immigrants work, despite the threat of £20,000 fines per illegal worker, for doing so.

For instance, The Cloves Indian Restaurant, in Bottomhouse near Leek, in Staffordshire, England, where in March 2017 an immigration raid took every one of the waiters away. Yes an entire restaurant staffed by illegal immigrants ... in fact as hinted at already, this is actually an incredibly common event, which is ignored by the national TV news media.

In 2016, a raid on The Shimla Palace, in Wolseley Bridge, Staffordshire, saw one man found hiding in a kitchen area, and when they went upstairs, the police found a second man who climbed out of the window, then ran along the dual carriageway. Two more were found hiding in the bathroom.

In November 2016 staff from the immigration enforcement section, went to the Agra Restaurant, in Accrington Road, Hapton, acting on a tip-off about the employment of illegal immigrants. There they found a 29-year-old man from Bangladesh was working at the Indian eaterie, after overstaying on a visitor’s visa, while another 29-year-old Bangladeshi national, who had entered the country on a student visa, was found to be working, and his visa had also expired.

Other raids earlier that year, in a joint operation between the National Crime Agency in Blackburn and Burnley, on illegal labour, resulted in five arrests being made at three premises, three in Blackburn and two in Burnley. Seventy workers were spoken to in the combined operation.

In 2017 at the Mivesi, in Alnick Northumberland, four Bangladeshi men were arrested during a raid by immigration officers. Also in 2017, the Razza restaurant in Felsted, and the Radhuni in Newport, both lost their licences after immigration raids by the police and immigration officials. A total of five suspects were arrested on immigration offences.

More recently, in April 2019, immigration enforcement officers visited the Tamarind Fine Indian Dining, in Norwich, which resulted in three illegal workers being detained following a raid on the Indian restaurant in Blofield Heath.

Help Wanted Here As Well
Help Wanted Here As Well .....

The Home Office reported that the immigration checks identified a total of seven Bangladeshi men who had no permission to work in the UK. One who was in the UK illegally, while two men had overstayed their visas. All three men were detained and faced deportation from the UK .... however a further four men were told that they must report regularly to the Home Office, while their immigration statuses are determined.

These cases are just a random selection, and represent the tip of the iceberg. I could have written up dozens of other such reports. Illegal employment fuels people trafficking, denies people proper employment, costs the tax payers, encourages crime, encourages visa abuse, and causes tension in local communities. Surely National Insurance numbers and Tax Records should stop this practice?

Perhaps we do need a national identity system for all UK residents, if we are to restore trust in the immigration visa scheme in the UK.
