.... the Monsa Lisa by Leonardo DaVinci, was voted the greatest artwork of all time (as voted for by British people).
Yes, a rather small painting of a not that pretty and slightly green woman was voted as the best artwork and coincidentally also has the highest insurance valuation in history, with Van Gogh's sunflower series voted in to second place.
The poll, carried out by the agency Perspectus Global also said that Damien Hurst's pickled shark was the 18th greatest artwork (which probably tells you something about modern taste). Anyways, for those of you who love to see a list, and lets be fair I haven't done one in ages and ages, the top ten are:
- The Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci.
- Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh.
- The Sistine Chapel ceiling by Michelangelo.
- The Angels of the North by Anthony Gormley.
- Balloon Girl by Banksy.
- The Scream by Edvard Munch.
- The Statue of Liberty by Frederic Auguste Barthoildi.
- The Terracotta Army of Xian by various potters.
- The Thinker by Auguste Rodin.
- The Haywain by John Constable.
I had to laugh as Banksy at number 5 ...... and I am surprised that pop art inventor Andy Warhol's soup cans didn't get a mention.
So I'll add my own contribution ......
