That's always brought home to me whenever I see a picture of the solar system.
But I always forget to think of our numerous moons ..... |

.... which are rather lovely in of themselves.
I think that I have hinted before on this blog, that when I was a boy, we all expected that by the distant year of 2024, mankind would have at least colonised the moon and a.n.other object in the solar system, usually a Terra-formed Mars, but as we didn't know much about the planets (there were some who theorised even up up until the Mariner 2 probe in December 1962, showed otherwise, that Venus was a vast jungle world), Venus was sometimes put forward as a candidate.
But history hasn't been all that kind to the idea of manned exploration since the heady days of the moon landings, with unmanned probes a cheaper and more safe option. In truth we still haven't been able to completely overcome the risks of radiation, muscle loss, and the fact that even a trip to Mars, could be a one way ticket ..... so a Moon colony is likely the only viable possibility right now.
However, lets be honest, we are destroying the Earth and need to get some viable colonies off-earth if we want to save the race, so maybe that will act as the catalyst for a spurt of private enterprise space colonisation in the next 50 years.
