Sharleen Ndungu asked Greggs bakery for a 'meat free' sausage roll (strange I admit, but vegan sausage rolls were a big success recently) ......
Greggs Serves Veggie Sausage Rolls - But Not Always To The Right Customers |
.... however the staff at a Greggs branch in Canterbury Kent misheard her, and gave her a real meat sausage roll.
Ms Ndungu, who is aged 20, bit into the meaty treat, and then realised
the error. But as is the way in the new snowflake society, instead of
accepting that a genuine error had been made, she claims that she burst
into tears, and had heart palpitations with the realisation that her
mouth had touched animal flesh.
She has been a vegan for a whole two years, and told the press (yes
it escalated to that level), "I haven't had meat in two years. My belly
started hurting and my heart started going crazy. People can be allergic
to pork and potentially die from such stupid mistakes."
Point of information at this point - Meat allergies are usually attributed to a sugar found in meat called alpha-galactose (alpha-gal), and is very very rare (and very unlikely). Well-cooked pork meat (such as a Greggs sausage rolls),
causes fewer reactions, than uncooked meat. In theory one of the
symptoms could be anaphylaxis and lead to death, but all I could find
was this (linked to pork/cat syndrome), and these other more common examples (all of which are undercooked meat deaths).
Anyway, continuing on .... "I was panicking because that only happens when
I consume meat – this doesn’t happen when I have other food. I’m
traumatised for life now – I’m never going to Greggs again."
After refusing an in-store £2 refund, and then an offer of a £30 voucher
from Greggs Head Office she said to anyone who would listen, "I was
asking for a public apology to make people aware that they should watch
out for things like this. It’s my choice not to consume meat because it
causes cancer. That choice has been taken away from me."
A manager at the Greggs store said: ‘We have a fix-it-now company
policy where we offer the customer a refund straight away. If they don’t
accept that, then we will put them through to head office. She
definitely received an apology – it is company standard.’
Ms Ndungu apparently took her cause to Twitter, but has reportedly since
deleted the video ... I should imagine from fear of mocking abuse. "Traumatised for life" by a mouthful of meat .... she doesn't know what trauma is ..... one can only shake your head and walk away.
