Where Next USA?

The sharp growth of politically motivated violence in the USA over last eight years ....

.... shows that the USA is increasingly not one nation under god, but rather two hostile groups in one nation.

The latest in a string of violent attacks across the political divide is the killing of the right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk, but the process was started by the attack on Republican congressmen practicing on a northern Virginia baseball field in 2017.

This was followed a few years later by the attack on Nancy Pelosi and her husband. Of course Donald Trump was actually hit by a snipers bullet last year and earlier this year, two Democratic state legislators in Minnesota were shot in their homes, one fatally wounded.

The irony that Kirk had been answering a question about US gun violence at the time he was killed has not been lost on many commentators. "Do you know how many mass shooters there have been in America over the last ten years?" someone in the audience asked him. "Counting or not counting gang violence," he answered, before the single killing shot rang out and he slumped backward and the crowd scattered in panic.

To some extent, this US political violence mirrors an increasingly angry right v left clash across the democratic world, but of course, the access to guns in the USA means deaths and assassination attempts are more likely the end result.

At this juncture it's impossible to predict how this cycle of political violence is going to end, but end it has to, if the USA is to remain one nation. However, whilst the divisive figure of Donald Trump towers over the US political scene, this violent anger and division between left and right is only going to grow and fester over at least the next three years.

Even after he is gone from direct power, his influence will no doubt linger on in the Republican party and thus create tensions that may well fracture both the party or US politics for decades to come.

Americans often like to end political rallies with a chorus of god, bless America .... which given the current political state of the union, is probably going to a more heartfelt plea for many than in former times.

  1. The fuss in the US about the hardline consetvative christian Charlie Kirk is driven by the MAGA base, led by news outlets like Fox and perhaps is the wrong focus.

Political violence in the US is on both sides with both Republicans and Democrats being victims.

They should realise that its a two way process that is a danger to the entire US political structure. Just look at our neighbours Mexico where politicians are gunned down every week in a near narcotics run system.

    Do we want that?

    1. You might be wrong about the UK. There was support for Kirk expressed at a right wing Tommy Robinson organised rally today.

    2. I have read the blog post, which wasn't about the Charlie Kirk killing, but referencing it as part of a story about the political violence trend in the USA.

However the comments appear more Kirk murder orientated, and so I have been to the Fox News website, and it is very Kirk story dominated, with countless stories on the murder and the fallout.

Here's just a few snapshots of their coverage:

It covers Elon Musk attacking the Left, and about people who didn't agree with Mr Kirks views, being sacked for allegedly disrespecting the late Mr Kirk in some way.

There were also stories about Mr Kirks widow, and President Trump's praising the justice dept or homeland security for capturing Mr Kirks alleged killer.

It's a very strongly orientated mix which could be seen by some as being biased. However that's the way it is in the US.

Other views are expressed at other News outlets such as CNN.

    3. For anyone interested in how Mr Kirk got to be known in some circles in the UK, the linked article below explains it.

Basically, his Turning Point UK movement failed in the UK, but his TikTok debates became well known, amongst younger users of that platform.

So while the vast majority of people in the UK hadn't heard of him, those on the right (or left) who used that platform had come across him.

So, whilst many of us might be bemused when Keir Starmer started making statements about someone we had never heard of in the UK, those who follow politics such as MPs would have been aware of the impact his killing would have in the US, and of course on President Trump who considered Mr Kirk a personal friend.

    4. A lot of comments on this. I will confirm that my post was about political violence and not about Mr Kirk of whom I knew nearly nothing but his name from a news report of his killing. Again the rally in London I was only vaguely aware of as it was organised by Tommy Robinson but on Saturday (after I had posted on Friday) reports emerged on Elon Musk's comments.

I have seen how many stories Fox news have run on this event and its far more than for example CNN (who are my normal US news channel), were running on it. I have just read the politico article on the link provided and its an interesting piece.

      Thanks for all the comments.

  2. CNN have another take on the sackings of anyone who is negative about Mr Kirk.

The United States is truly a very divided society these days.

    1. There does seem to be a backlash against people whose comments are deemed by one group as being inappropriate. Its ironic that the right (and left) in US politics are arguing that people should be allowed to say things that others don't like e.g. Mr Kirk, without fear of attack, but yet if anyone says something that they don't like about Mr Kirk, then they could be sacked. This is just creating more anger and rage in an already heated atmosphere in a very divided country. Thanks for the comment
