... this would be as frozen mammoths were exposed to the surface, due to melting ice or thaws, and the meat was then taken either by animals or very possibly local hunters ... of course we can never know.
But it would tie in to the theory that it was man who caused or helped the extinction of the mammoths in the first place, via hunting with the last beasts dying around 4,000 years ago on Wrangel Island, North of Siberia. |

But synthetic meat by Australian manufacturer Vow, a start-up company creating cultured meat (meat created in the laboratory), wouldn't let that final extinction stop them, when they recreated a cultured form of mammoth meatball. Oddly there looks like two different versions in the images on the web, but the reports all say just one was made.
They achieved this in 2023, by using publicly available genetic sequences of mammoths taken from frozen mammoth bodies. They then filled in any gaps in the sequences by using the equivalent sequences from African Elephants .... the results were implanted into sheep cells. They then grew the result in the laboratory until they had enough to make a small mammoth meatball.
They didn't eat their Frankenstein creation, as it has been created simply to stimulate a debate about the technology they were using to create cultured meat in the laboratory. However it also suggests that researchers who are indeed hoping to revive the Siberian mammoth from extinction, may not be as far off as they may have feared.
