..... so to that end, the chest was being photographed.
When they opened one of the drawers and found a shrivelled piece of lemon citrus fruit. It would have no meaning except that it was inscribed with the legend which reads 'Given By Mr P Lu Franchini Nov 4 1739 to Miss E Baxter'.
The chest was sold for a mere £32 ($42) but the old fruit which was also put up for sale "for a bit of fun" at £40 to £60 ($52 - $78) was eventually sold for £1,400 ($1,818). The auctioneers could only say it was because "you'll never see an object like this at auction again."
