.... trying to satisfy everyone can make it an impossible job, and lead you to make some strange decisions.
If you have any doubts just ask Bernard Denis, Ex-Mayor of Saint-Come-du-Mont in Normandy. In September 2023 he was found blindfolded with nails planted in both his hands and feet, in what initially looked like a failed attempt to crucify him.
He had complained that he was being targeted by a backer of Mr Éric Zemmour in the town, who supported hard-Right pundit (who had run in the 2022 presidential race, coming 4th in the first round), and who had threatened him before, by making death threats, shooting at his van, and burning two of his cars to destruction in an arson raid, so initially the police looked at this connection.
But the thing was, none of these claims had ever been proved, when he had first made them starting way back in December 2021, and the police could not find any evidence for any of them ever having happened this second time, nor for these 'hard-right' people causing the injuries to him in this latest 'attack'.
After further consideration they determined that Mr Denis had lied about all the incidents, in order to frame his political opponents, and arrested him for "denouncing an imaginary crime" .... in Russia that would get you a medal these days. However, rather than a medal, on the 27th of March he was given a suspended sentence of four months' imprisonment, for the denunciation of imaginary crimes and misdemeanour's after he admitted staging the "attacks".
However, it appears the ex-mayors travails are not over. He had apparently been willy waiving, because he was up before the beak again on the 27th of November 2024, in a case of sexual display before an employee of the commune. Accused of sexual exposure, the former mayor of Saint-Côme-du-Mont was convicted by the court. The Coutances (Manche) court sentenced Bernard Denis to a six-month suspended prison sentence for acts of sexual exhibition committed between 11 March and 2 July 2022, in Saint-Côme-du-Mont to whit, the exposure of his private parts to a housekeeper of the town hall of Saint-Côme-du-Mont.
I think its fair to say his political career is over.
