..... well imagine being a passenger on a 9th June 2024 Austrian Airlines Airbus A320 holiday flight from Majorca, Spain to Vienna, Austria.
All was going well until the Airbus was hit by hail storm at 20,000ft (6,000m) just as it approached Vienna Schwechat airport. It had 173 passengers and 6 crew on board and the flight crew had started the final descent from 34,000 feet but at about 60 nautical miles from Vienna, it was passing through FL200 (20,000 feet), when the aircraft entered a thunderstorm cell.The storm hadn't shown on the planes radar, so the flight crew were taken by surprise as the hail started crashing into the cockpit, so great was the violence that it shattered the cockpit windows and ripped away the nose cone of the plane.
A mayday message was sent, but the crew managed to land safely only 5 minutes late. No one was hurt in the incident and its not clear from the report, whether the passengers were made aware of the danger they were in. We tend to forget these days that air travel has risks.
