Lost Heritage

 I had call recently to recall the fate of a pub that I used to drink in ....

The Albert Inn - On Walmer Street, Rusholme, Manchester.

.... in response to a comment from another former punter.

So I checked the fate of all the other pubs that were in that area of Manchester, and which I had also drunk in, in my 20's and early 30's ... this is ignoring all the Manchester pubs of my teens, which were mainly in the Chorlton, Withington and Didsbury areas of South Manchester, or in the town centre. Later on I also used a couple of pubs in the Longsight area.

However for a long period in the mid 1970's and 1980's, I was drinking in the Rusholme area, and the all the following pubs were thriving in Rusholme when I was there ... or at least they were still open in the 1970's and 1980's:

• The Osbourne
• The Birch Villa
• The Albert Inn
• The Lord Lyon/Nelson
• The Whitworth
• The Sherwood Inn
• The Clarence
• Rusholme Working Men's Social Club

 

All now gone .... along with my youth!

 

So I dreaded to think how many of my teenage pubs are also gone, but without too much investigation, I now know that The Southern, The Seymour, The Oaks Hotel (where Iggy Pop and David Bowie amongst many others, once performed), and Mauldeth Hotel are all gone. 

 

But the The Horse and Jockey has survived ... mainly as its a 500 year old listed building. Still its a shock at seeing all the pubs that were mostly 100 years or more old, decimated in the last 20 years and gone forever.

We are destroying our own culture and history on an industrial scale ... its actually sad to see the loss of the heritage of South Manchester.
