.... found that in areas where brothels and strip clubs operated, the levels of sex crimes reduced significantly.
In the period between 2004 and 2012, a large number of such venues opened in some areas of the city. But in the immediate area surrounding these venues, crime generally fell by around 13 per cent. This of course was the opposite of what was expected to have happened.The research
also confirmed that these crimes
were not being transferred into the neighbouring areas a bit further away. In
those neighbouring areas, there was no increase in sex crimes. However other types of
crimes didn't reduce in the areas surrounding these businesses, so the
reductions in sex crimes weren't caused by the increased police presence
in the areas either .... the researchers were unable to find any other reason as to why the sex assaults numbers dropped when brothels and
strip clubs were located in an area.
Of course, as 'facts' are not how public
policy is set in much of the world anymore, then don't expect any change
in attitudes about these types of venues being opened in cities from politicians and pressure
groups. So an interesting finding, that suggests that a number of women could be saved
from assaults, will be filed away, and forgotten or ignored, as just another
inconvenient truth.
