Sometimes the facts that come before our eyes are strange indeed ...

| Oldest Easter Eggs - Possibly. |
... who for example would have thought that there was an 'Oldest Easter Egg In The World', or even rival claims for that honour?
But there is. The proud alleged owner of one claimant is (we hope he's still around) 94 year old Eric Boden, who was give the Nestle milk chocolate Easter egg wrapped in red and silver foil with a big ribbon around it. The milky chocolate treat was given to him as a baby in 1931 when he was too young to eat it, so his parents put it safely away for him to enjoy when he was older. But they forgot about it, and it remained tucked away, out of sight, out of mind.
Eventually Mr Bodens parents passed away and the old family home was cleared for sale or rental. Mr Boden was vaguely aware that the egg was hidden somewhere in the house, but not exactly where .... but he found it, and its now kept safe in a cool dark cupboard ever since .... its now claimed to be the oldest Easter egg known to exist.
However a simple Internet search uncovered that there are a number of other claimants for this title in the UK alone, and at least one, sold by auction beats Mr Boden's egg in age by several years. In 2013 an Easter Egg in Scotland made its claim .... with a Royal Easter egg of 1937 vintage, making it 87 years old.
In 2017 an Austrian family had an Easter egg which dates back to 1907, but its a real egg shell scratched and painted ... so not a chocolate egg, and so doesn't qualify for the edible title. But in 2018, UK historian Mark Lawrence bought two Easter eggs – the painted one dates from 1899, and the chocolate egg dates from 1912 – at an auction.
In 2021, a Pascall’s chocolate Easter egg which has remained unopened for almost 100 years after being given to a little girl in 1924, was bought for more than £1,000 at auction by Devon tourist attraction Bygones, of Torquay ... this age of 100 years was verified by Hanson's Auctioneers.
In 2023 it was reported that another Australian manufactured, Pascall Easter egg in Sheffield, was 83 years old. Finally there was another Scottish claim to the title in 2023 with an Easter egg that was 91 years old bought in March 1933.
What all these claims prove is that:
- There are a lot of very old chocolate Easter eggs in the cupboard.
- Some old people haven't ever done a Internet search (all these results came from the search term 'Oldest Easter egg') and,
- That the journalists who reported each claim as 'the worlds oldest' are basically lazy gits.
