.... with a string between two tin cans (I say we advisedly, maybe kids these days stopped doing this? Perhaps kids think this is stupid as phones don't have wires?).
Anyways, physicist John Hems is of the generation that did remember these devices and in March 2023 he set out to create the longest tin can telephone that worked in the world. He chose the town of Sidmouth where a Science Festival was being held (hence his being there), for his attempt and so he strung a wire 1,227ft (374 m) between the lookout point at Connaught Gardens to Bedford Steps on the Esplanade it was connected to two plastic yoghurt tubs.
Once in position his colleague Dr George Littlejohn spoke the immortal words "This is Sidmouth Science Festival world record tin can telephone." The words were clearly heard at Mr Hems end .... and a new world record was set.

Moderation is on for older posts to stop spamming and comments that are off topic or inappropriate from being posted .... comments are reviewed within 48 hours. I don't block normal comments that are on topic and not inappropriate. Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.
Final decision on all comments is held by the blog author and is final.
