.... and indeed can fetch very large prices if they have especially lucky designs or colouration.
The world record price paid for a Koi Carp sold in an auction in Japan, was £1.4 million - £1 million more than the previous highest bid. The nine-year-old fish is 3ft 3ins long, red and white and named S Legend, and is of the Kohaku variety, and the most recognisable among the many varieties of carp that can be bought.It was bought by Miss Yingying, a collector from Taiwan, after a fierce bidding war at the Saki Fish farm in the city of Hiroshima. To be the perfect Kohaku, the white has to be pristine without any discolouration of yellowing and the red crisp.
However, there are more lowly types of carp that are bred for eating. Such was the Crucian Carp that Cindy Lao and her partner bought from a London fishmonger in March 2023, along with several sea bass (Crucian carp is edible, and is said to have a fresh flavour and tender meat). She took them all home to Bristol and put them in the fridge ..... 48 hours afterwards she took the Crucian Carp out of the fridge.

She was shocked to see the fishes gills moving ... so her and her partner put the fish in the bath filled with cold water ..... the fish responded and started to revive and soon was swimming contentedly around the bath tub. However obviously this was a temporary solution as they would need the bath, but they had a second shower room. But they found it off putting when using the toilet in the main bathroom.
They renamed the fish Lazarus and found a local Koi Carp enthusiast, who has rehoused him/her in her garden pond with a Koi carp. But one things for sure, that fishmonger sold very fresh fish!!
