Animal ecologists often claim that animals are better off in the wild than in zoo's ...

| Ingo The Old Flamingo |
Of course there are outliers in both the wild and captivity, who live far longer than is usual for the species. In February 2024 Berlin Zoo reported that a flamingo named Ingo aged 75 had died. Ingo was the oldest verified flamingo in the world, and had been in the Zoo since the mid 1950's, but had a ring on his leg with the legend 'Cairo: 23.6.1948' so he was at least that old and probably somewhat older.
In the wild, the oldest known wild bird is a Laysan albatross named 'Wisdom', estimated to be at least 74 years old, and was first ringed in 1956 (as an adult) and hatched a chick in 2021. Its believed that conservation efforts around Midway Atoll in the North Pacific Ocean where she lives, have led to a plentiful food supply.
In captivity (or as pets) parrots have a reputation for living very long lives. The oldest parrot with a verified (Guinness World Records) lifetime was 'Cookie', a Major Mitchell's cockatoo (Cacatua leadbeateri), who lived to be at least 82 years and 88 days old, passing away on the 27th of August 2016.
However claims for far longer lived parrots have been made (but without verifiable records). Macaws in particular seem to live long lives ... perhaps the most famous claimant is 'Charlie' who was said to be Winston Churchill's ex-parrot. Her life was documented by mentions (such as her alleged rants against the Nazi's picked up from her ex-owner), and she was claimed to be 114 (its not clear if she is still alive - reports vary), and living at Heathfield Nurseries.
But Lady Soames, Churchill's daughter claimed that he had actually owned an African Grey called Polly (which he sold before he became prime minister) .... so Charlie is not officially recognised as being 114 as she could be an imposter and much younger.
Officially, the (Guinness) recognised oldest parrot is a Green-winged macaw named Poncho, who was recorded as being 92 years old (in the wild 52 or 60, and in captivity up to 80 is possible). Originally owned by Birds and Animals Unlimited, a company that provides Warner Brothers and Universal film studios with animals for films. Her last film was 102 Dalmatians which apparently was filmed in England, but she was deemed too old and frail to ship back to the USA, so she lives in retirement at Abbie's Pets & Exotics - Formerly Becks Pets & Exotics, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.
If I was an animal .... a good Zoo or loving owner would be preferably to living in the wild.
