Icelandic Cricket Faces Tough Conditions ... But They Are Vikings. |
I had been under the impression that despite their thrashing of the England football team in the last European Championships in 2016, they only had two level playing areas for football.
So the idea that they played cricket seemed unlikely, but in fact, not only are they able to play, but its national team is embarking on its first international tour. They intend to play four matches in England in July 2018. This will include one game against an MCC XI at Hampton Hill in south-west London on the 24th of July, and two against .... Switzerland.
That alone warrants another surprised eyebrow raise. Who would have thought that they played cricket either, but in fact the Swiss are already affiliate members of the International Cricket Council - the Icelanders hope to achieve that status shortly having been playing the game since 1999, with a total of two teams in Iceland - the Reykjavík Vikings and Kópavogur Puffins, with expatriate players in the majority.
English Football Humbled .... Will It Be English Cricket Next? |
However, one can only shudder at the potential for an upset equal to the crushing of English football, if they qualify for the one day Cricket World Cup by 2025. Is there no end to the humbling's that English sport has to suffer during my lifetime?
The origins of "Cricket" :
ReplyDeleteKrikkit is a planet located in a dust cloud composed chiefly of the disintegrated remains of the enormous spaceborne computer Hactar.
The laid back, gentle game of Cricket not withstanding, in short, the inhabitants of Krikkit were manipulated over generations by Hactar into a campaign to destroy the rest of the Universe...
