The University of Texas is missing about 100 brains stored on behalf of Austin State Hospital.
The glass jars containing the brains in formaldehyde (including that of clock tower sniper Charles Whitman), may have been taken by students for pranks or room decorations.
However, it may not be as innocent as that ...... In 2014, David Charles of Indianapolis, repeatedly broke into the Indiana Medical History Museum, and stole jars of brain tissue as well as numerous other preserved materials. Some of the human remains dated back to the 1890's, and came from the former Central State Hospital, a mental institution that closed down in 1994.
He sold six jars of the brains on eBay for $600, plus $70 in shipping to a San Diego man. However the buyer suspected something was wrong, and in a sting operation helped police capture Charles, who was charged with theft, marijuana possession and paraphernalia possession. He'd stolen 60 jars of human tissue just the previous day, according to court documents.
Mind you, the philosopher Hilary Putnam said we could all just be brains-in-a-vat in his 1981 book, 'Reason, Truth and History' .... and as recently as 2016, Laura D'Olimpio, from the University of Notre Dame, in Australia, has also suggested that we humans could be taking part in a science experiment, and are actually being kept alive in a jar of nutrients that sits on a laboratory bench. If you want to take it further, then the French philosopher Renee Descartes suggested that we were all being controlled, in his 1641 'Meditations on First Philosophy'.
In it he imagines there exists an omnipotent, malicious demon that deceives us, leading us to believe we are living our lives when, in fact, reality could be very different to how it appears to us. This of course is the basis of the the film 'The Matrix'.
