and then there are cons.
The web site was for men and women to meet and have discrete sex with each other ... actually it was very pointedly aimed at those who wanted to cheat on their partners with the people who they hooked up with .... or maybe not. For instance UK males who joined were charged £179 for an affair membership, in which they were given contact details, via its own email accounts.
However when its membership was hacked, it was found that the site had just 12,000 women registered and active, while 36 million men were members. The site, which had claimed 5.5 million women were members, had been valued at $650million.
But most surprising about this story, is the fact that the site still operates, despite all the revelations, and its google blurb was still claiming that '45 Million Members Cant Be Wrong' when I wrote this post (long after the story became public).... or is that just 'Over 35 Million Members'..... however ...
.... I checked just before I posted, and the site is still there, but the text copy no longer makes membership number claims, and features pictures of women who it says (if you look carefully) are *Not actual members' ..... All proving that while sex sells, the promise of sex sells just as well.
Or to misquote P.T. Barnum “Nobody ever lost a dollar by underestimating the gullibility of the public.”
