My Dad Was Right .... A Great Car |
This after a poll run by Auto Express magazine in December 2017, asking for the most iconic car of all time placed the Citroen DS as the coolest of them all.
It just pipped the E-Type Jaguar in the poll of 5,000 enthusiasts. Of course they are still made now, but we are talking about the 1955 - 1970's model.
My dad was a massive fan of the DS, and repaired and ran a number of them for over a decade in the 1970's and 1980's .... this when the variable suspension system was too much for home repairs for most people, but not for my dad!
President De Gaulle In Citroen DS |
He always told me that we were riding like a president when we went out in his car, as President De Gaulle and other French Presidents rose the very same model (plus or minus a bit of bullet proof glass).
For the record the top eight in the poll are;
- Citroen DS
- Jaguar E-Type
- Lancia Stratos
- Land Rover Defender
- Lamborghini Miura
- Mini
- Lotus Esprit
- Porsche 911
- BMW E34 5 Series
- Citroen 2CV
- Ford Cortina MkIII
- Ford Fiesta XR2
- Jaguar XJ6
- Mini 1275GT
- Renault 5 GT Turbo
- Rolls Silver Cloud/Bentley S
- Volkswagon Camper
- VolkswagonGolf VR6
Jose Mujica Drives A 1987 VW Beetle |
..... but my favourite communist president, ex-Uruguayan president Jose Mujica showed his style by driving a 1987 VW Beetle.
Coincidentally I just bought a Citroën, a Citroën Jumpy. I bought it despite the make, and the model name because it suited my requirements. It's the same vehicle as the Peugeot Expert and the Fiat Scudo. I thought that I'd never choose a Citroën, I never liked their shape exemplified by the DS, but the apparent sharing of car types suggests that today a Citroën isn't really a Citroën.
ReplyDeleteI guess one transit van is much like another .... Hope it gives good service. Thanks for the comment Vroomfondel.
DeleteMine's a second generation and looks more like a large car than the 'van' looking 1st generation or the 'Transit' looking 3rd generation.
DeleteThanks, I think that it will be a good tourer for the family.
