Love And relationships are not easy things to manage .....
.... most of us try our best to muddle through. The majority hit upon a workable relationship and some end up with none, but we all try it at least once.
Now in our modern Western world these short vignettes are just illustrative of the worst/seedier aspects of modern western relationships ....
Love On, Career Off
In March 2015, a loved up, but adulterous couple were filmed in a passionate lovers tryst in the offices of an insurers in Christchurch, New Zealand.
In their excitement, they had forgotten that their office could be seen by the drinkers of the Carlton Bar and Eatery. The drinkers watched the couple perform a sex act for 30 minutes, whilst the house band played the Kings of Leon hit, Sex On Fire.
The couple, a fifty year old married man with two teenage children, and a 26-year-old secretary who had recently become engaged, didn't turn in to work after the event went viral .... but apparently their employers sacked the couple shortly afterwards.
The woman, who had emigrated from England, allegedly fled the country, and returned to the Solihull area in the UK. Apparently her engagement was also over .... its not known if the sacked managers marriage survived the encounter. A steep price to pay for love (or was that two love rats in lust?).
Love Doesn't Live Here Any More
In a sad commentary of our world or perhaps just a strange idea of a Christmas present, thirteen people filed for divorce on Christmas Day in England and Wales, via on-line applications in 2018.
That sad little statistic was contained in the release of the figures showing that 455 on-line divorce applications submitted to HM Courts and Tribunals Service, between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day 2018/2019. However the fact is that the divorce rate for opposite-sex couples in England and Wales are actually at their lowest level since 1973.
Why that is, is not really clear, but it appears that some of this is down to the fact that while marriages can be seen as more stable, fewer of us are tying the knot than ever before. Official figures showed that 9.8% of the population of England and Wales were cohabiting in 2016. This is up from 6.8% in 2002. There were 3.3 million cohabiting families across the UK in 2016, more than double the 1996 figure of 1.5 million families.
So the divorce figures would naturally fall if this trend has continued ... it may even be, that some of the married population don't bother with getting a divorce, before entering in to new relationships.
Take for example Mr Neil Rattue, who simply faked divorce papers in order to marry his girlfriend in 1998. He had two children with her, but never told his separated first wife Susan about this. They had married in 1983 and although separated, he had told her they could never divorce as they had debts of £60,000, which she had to pay off before they could legally end the marriage.
He had even told her that they must sell their family home in Salisbury to pay off his debts, while he went off to York for work and met his new 'wife' .... meanwhile Susan was forced to live with her elderly parents, while trying to pay off the £45,000 remainder of Rattue’s debt after the house sale.
To this end, he would ring her daily to remind her that she had too save money to pay off debts. He was eventually exposed by Rattue's new 'sister in law' writing to Susan. He was arrested, and admitted bigamy at Salisbury magistrates court, and was sentenced to 8 months prison. A small price for ruining two women and two children's lives.
As the real wife said "He is a compulsive liar. He has stolen my life from me." ... sadly he will be out of prison now, and his first wife will get no compensation as the judge copped out saying "“it’s impossible for the court to quantify the amount that should be ordered,” but said the money she had paid for Rattue’s debts could be pursued in civil court.
If love is a difficult part of life, the end of it can be just as tricky .....
