.... with a population of 3.19 million. Its roughly 56,276 square miles, while the UK is about 94,354 square miles so its very sparsely populated in comparison.
It ranks highly for safety in the US and around a third of the population live in just 4 metropolitan areas, with the rest living in large rural areas. So you wouldn't expect from this description that crime would be a major issue, and certainly not barbaric in nature. But you (and I) would be very wrong.
By chance, researching another post, I ended up on just one local news channel, CBS2Iowa.com and found the following reports dated between October and November 2024. I restricted myself to just Iowa stories. Remember this is just 3.2 million, or put another way a third of London's population or approximately the same as Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester combined, but scattered over an area a half the size of the whole of the UK, compared with London's 607 square miles.
It was surprising what was being reported on just one channel that day:
Cedar Rapids man charged after trying to strangle his mother with an American flag.
Marion father admits to strangling 5-year-old son to death Tuesday.
Iowa man charged with first degree murder of infant.
Iowa Supreme Court affirms life sentence for juvenile convicted of killing teacher.
Eastern Iowa woman sentenced to 18 years in prison for role in Cordal Lewis murder.
I was mildly surprised at the severity of the crimes ..... but probably shouldn't be. This is a meaningless post in many ways, and probably of little interest to my American readers .... but somehow it piqued my interest.
However, I should point out that some of the wider US stories also being reported on that one visit to CBS2Iowa.com were far more outré.

These are not the stories that you might to see on any one month in London!
