Not Just A Sewer Vent Pipe In Exmouth |
.... and its fair to say that not a lot goes on there.
We can judge that from the fact that when a rusty pole that acted as a vent for the sewer system since 1909 suddenly disappeared in 2023, it was reported in the press that the locals were up in arms. Apparently, according to reports, this sewer vent had become something of a tourist attraction (which speaks volumes for the town doesn't it?) .... Trip Advisor even went so far as to say that it was one of the "Best Things to Do" in the town.
It even had its own appreciation society 'The Rusty Pole Society' and a spokesman Mike Menhenitt, said "It was safe, hurt no-one, and provided a much-loved focal point' ... the society had planed to use it as a Maypole, a plan that had to be discarded.
But then the East Devon Council spoke up and said that they had removed it as there were safety concerns (it was rusting away), and would soon be replaced with a modern vent. No souls in hearts of bureaucrats. Or so went the story as it appeared in various press stories ..... but timing is everything.
This story was released in early April ..... and Mike Menhenitt was actually in the Society of Exmouth Museum a volunteer run group looking for publicity ..... Yep it was an Aprils Fool joke. The pipe of course did exist, but no one cared when the council took it down to replace it, and it wasn't a tourist attraction .... But it achieved the required publicity for the town and museum, that it had never attracted in its life time, as the story went viral and world wide. 😂
