Urine Trouble

In Japan, citizens normally obey the rules and norms expected by society ....

.... this includes waste disposal laws. But, and there is always a but, there are those who swim against tides of conformity. Such a one was a 46 year old security guard in Fujinomiya City, Japan. He was something of a collector, in this case it was not something you want to see.

His unusual habit was exposed after a cardboard box containing 27 assorted sealed bottles was found in a Pachinko Parlours (a strange form of slot machine with balls), multi-story car park on the 6th of November 2021. These were found to contain 23 pints (13 litres) of stale urine. This breached both hygiene for the parlour, and the local by-laws on waste disposal by the city .... so CCTV was used by the police to see who had dumped the offending liquid, and he was finally arrested on the 24th of May, 2022.

When questioned the security guard claimed that "it was a bother going to the toilet, so I saved it. But I had trouble disposing of it, so I threw it away at my favourite pachinko parlour."

This is an odd story on many levels but also leaves a lot of questions:

  1. Why was it difficult to go to the toilet?
  2. Why didn't he just empty the bottle each night into the toilet?
  3. Why did he think his favourite pachinko parlour would want his bodily fluids left with them?

Sadly, none of these questions are answered in the brief round-up of the story that I could find.

But he has a soul mate in the Gifu City. In June 2020 someone started leaving beer cans on the side of the road, containing urine. Along with these deposits there were also plastic Bento containers, with human faeces in them ..... cue, public disgust and outrage, but there were at least 12 more such dumping's in the same general area.

However in August 2020 a 62-year-old man was arrested as he was leaving six beer cans filled with urine on the street. When questioned by police, he admitted that the urine was his, stating that “The toilet in my apartment is broken and I didn’t know what to do with my waste. I figured if I put it in empty Bento boxes or beer cans and left them on the road, someone would take care of them for me.” .... investigators believed that as his home was in the centre of the other such drop-offs, that he was likely responsible for them all.

He was charged under the cities waste disposal laws ...
