| Batmania Melbourne |
... so it was with some glee that I saw a snippet in the UK press about the sightings in Melbourne Australia of a Batman stalking the mean streets.
His appearances, in what looked like a home-made Batman suit, caused some interest on social media, and photos popped up on-line and in the local press ... particularly as when Melbourne was founded, one of those men was John Batman (and indeed the settlement was briefly named ‘Batmania’ - 1835 until 1837) before changing to Melbourne. However the mystery of the dark knights appearance during Covid lock-down wasn't to last long, as 26 yr old, Taylor Tangas was arrested on an unrelated matter. He of course claimed that it was all a mistake and that like the comic book caped crusader he was being persecuted for crimes he didn't commit. He also claimed that he only wore the Batman suit in order to cheer people up, and prove the city was safe from Covid to his mom.
However the strong arm of the law said that the former MMA fighter, was indeed committing dark deeds, by swindling A$6,500 through a retail and betting scam. He used a stolen credit card to buy more than A$3,770 worth of goods on-line, as well as placing two bets on gambling sites worth A$2,800 .... he had a female accomplice in the crimes and when police raided her address they found a plethora of stolen ID's, an altered drivers licence, an embossing machine, and a record of the stolen goods.
It was later revealed that in May 2019, Mr Tangas was found driving an unregistered car while unlicensed and by the time of his magistrates appearance he had already been charged with possessing Methamphetamine in October 2020, and attempting to break into cars in June 2020 ..... bad Batman.
When he finally appeared before the beak on April the 9th 2021, he pleaded guilty to obtaining financial advantage by deception in Heidelberg Magistrates' Court on and he was fined A$400, and put on an 18-month correction order, and ordered to complete 120 hours of unpaid community work .... lucky Batman.
