I should imagine that being held hostage by a naked man armed with scissors .....

| James H Davis III Faced Serious Charges |
... is one of every persons possible nightmares.
But if your a woman, and the naked man is covered in blood, it must rank right up there in the top ones. Unfortunately for 80 year old Denyse Holt of Chicago, USA, that's exactly what happened to her on February 5th 2022. Her plight was only discovered when she failed to text her daughter Meredith Holt-Caldwell a daily Wordle score. The daughter knew something was wrong after she got no text replies, so she asked the police to investigate, stressing that she believed it was something serious rather than medical. To their credit the police investigated with a well being visit which uncovered the situation and a SWAT team was despatched.
Mrs Holt had been held for sometime, during which, the man who had cut himself when he broke a window to gain entry, insisted that she take a bath with him (with her still clothed in her nightie), then after not finding anything to tie her up with, locked her in the basements bathroom. When the police arrived, the resulting siege lasted 17 hours, before SWAT officers eventually used a stun gun to incapacitate him and rescue Ms Holt.
Mrs Holt was understandably shocked but otherwise unhurt, and told police and news teams that although very threatened, her kidnapper had assured her he would not harm her as he was naked only because his clothes had trackers on them. But he still collected all the telephones and mobile phones within the house, thus preventing Ms Holt from contacting anyone. She said she did stretches and meditative breathing in the basement to stay warm and calm, even though she said that "I didn't think I was going to live."
Her abductor was a 32-year-old male, later identified as James H Davis III, who police suspected suffered from a mental illness, but said that he faced a range of charges including home invasion with a deadly weapon, and aggravated kidnapping. Unfortunately the story died there .... as usual the press lost interest and didn't follow up. I've searched but no further reference to a court case or sentencing can be found.
