Ain't No Angel

Every now and then, we get reports in the press of miraculous events .....

Lucia, Francisco, Jacinta
These Children Saw A BVM Apparition

.... statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) crying blood (from places across the Christian world), or of visitations by the BVM passing messages of hope or warnings to the world.

The most famous of these Marian apparitions as sightings of the BVM are called, are Fatima in Portugal, Lourdes in France, Campinas in Brazil, Guadalupe in Mexico, and perhaps more unusually Akita in Japan.

But not many Angels are included in the various miraculous sightings .... in fact only the Angels of Mons comes immediately to mind, and that was actually just a widely believed myth inspired by a short story by Arthur Machen, after the short story was mislabelled as factual by the staff of the Evening News newspaper in London, and quickly spread to other tabloids.

However, where people claim to have had such a private visitation by an Angel, the visitations are usually believed to be messages directly from God that bring peace, joy, guidance, and some direction. Christians believe that God commands angels to protect people (Psalm 91:11-12).

So when in May 2022, a being claiming to be an Angel, was arrested by Northern Ireland Police in Lisburn, after he was found to have damaged a police cell van, it was something of a surprise to all concerned. The fair haired personage was repeatedly asked for his name, but on each occasion he insisted that he was the "Archangel Raphael."

He also denied the charges against him, despite the officers arresting him at the scene. District Judge Eamon King had enquired “does the Archangel Raphael want to say anything?”

“What’s the charge, what’s the charge, what damage did I do to the cell?" the Angel answered. However the magistrate was not impressed with the claims, and remanded him into custody until he identified himself to the court with his true name, address and DOB.

In June 2022, he later claimed to the magistrate to have “levitated over from Spain to Dublin and up to Northern Ireland,” after he was identified as 24-year-old Phillip Smith from Drogheda, Eire. But when he was released on bail, he rather mundanely said that he “would just get the train” back to Drogheda, where he would stay with a friend.
