..... who took part in the raid on St Nazaire for which he was awarded the Military Cross.

He was subsequently a prisoner in Colditz Castle. He later became the Commander, of the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces, and was Director of Operations during the Dhofar Rebellion in 1967, finally retiring from the British Army in 1976. After leaving the British Army, he was appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Hong Kong Police Force in 1978, and stayed there until his retirement in 1981 at the age of 60.

In other words he was part of that dying breed of  all round British hero, and another of that special breed of man that we are fast losing. However, that's not what actually drew me to writing a post .... no it was a little snippet reported in the Daily Telegraph obituary of the 15th July, 2018.

As reportedly his family was also reputed to have its own banshee, whose howl was said to be heard whenever a death was imminent in the family. On hearing that there had been local reports of banshee's cry being heard, the family would send telegrams to all known members of the family, to see if anyone had died.

Its not reported if there had been any reports of a banshees wail beforehand, but I would like to think that there were, but hidden by the family - Major-General Purdon died on the 27th of June 2018.
