When I was a younger man the name Charles Bronson meant....
.... only one thing, a mean and ugly lone vigilante walking the mean and violent streets of Manhattan and New York in the 1970's.
However in modern times its the name of Charles Arthur "Charlie" Salvador (formerly Charles Ali Ahmed; born Michael Gordon Peterson on 6 December 1952), better known in the press and public as Charles Bronson. He makes the news on a fairly regular basis, mainly for prison assaults, hostage taking, and marrying prison groupies.
His life history in short, is that after a series of petty crimes aged twenty-two, he was sentenced to seven years imprisonment ... came out for 69 days. He was re-arrested on 7 January 1988, and he was incarcerated until November 1992. Was released, and he was out for just 52 days before being arrested again and he has remained incarcerated ever since, due to his habit of beating up prison staff and governors.

Now aged 66, he was back in court in November 2018, charged with
attacking HM Wakefield prison governor Mark Docherty in January 2018,
shouting "I'll bite your fucking head off". However in a verdict that surprised everyone, the jury preferred to believe Mr Salvador (as he prefers to be known these days),
when he said he only planned to give Mr Docherty a hug. Found not
guilty or the first time in his life, a jubilant Mr Bronson proclaimed
that "British justice is the best in the world."
His other latest newsworthy action was in connection with a trial for attacking the deputy governor at HMP Frankland, Durham. He was on video camera for the initial hearing when he got more and more agitated as proceedings went too slowly for his liking. He apparently started pointedly looking at his watch .... when this didn't get the desired response from Judge Guy Kearl QC, and lawyers, he shouted out "Come on, its nearly dinner time. Fish and Chips today!"
Still ignored, he told the judge "That's a lovely wig you've got on there - do they make them in black?" ... he also complained about not getting a day trip to court, and that being on camera made him feel like he was "in Star Trek."
Whether he got his fish and chips supper is not reported, but I suspect that he did, because we would most certainly have heard about it if he hadn't. Of course the reason he's behind bars in the first place, and still behind them now, is that he was a poor criminal, quickly arrested and prone to violence ... in short he couldn't cope outside of prison, and I suspect that's why he regularly causes problems in prison ... mainly to ensure he doesn't have to ever get out.
He's prison institutionalised ... his mental health and self control issues were clearly in place prior to his becoming incarcerated, but were probably undiagnosed until then ... in that regard he's little different from hundreds of others who are in and out of the prison system ... but he's gained a public notoriety far in excess of that which his crimes seem to have warranted.
As well as acres of newspaper and magazine space in the UK, he has had eleven books published, including in 2008 his only self-penned book Loonyology: In My Own Words, as well the ghost written book Solitary Fitness, detailing an individual training process with minimal resources and space. He's also had books and TV documentaries made about him, and even had a film, Bronson, based loosely on his life released.
He himself has said: "I'm a nice guy, but sometimes I lose all my senses and become nasty. That doesn't make me evil, just confused." ...
