I couldn't resist this one.
Quack the Ripper, is like Count Duckula, one of those copy writers dreams, and its rare that they get to use it. So imagine their delight when this story came around ......
It was sparked by the discovery of at least nine dead female mallard ducks in a pond in Diss, Norfolk, England, sparking rumours of fowl play.
There were worries that someone was attacking the ducks until it was found that the culprit was a dominant drake (nicknamed Donald), who had been drowning them by jumping on their backs to mate. He was claimed to be by far the most fierce of the males, especially when it’s the mating season. He has been seen to chase off, or attack rival males.
Then, having driven them off, and with all the females to himself, he apparently flies around trying to mate with all of them, but in such an aggressive manner that he often pushes them under the water .... some drown in the process. The aptly named Doctor Martin Fowlie, of the RSPB, confirmed: “Mallards have quite a violent mating ritual.” .... something of an understatement I think.
