.... we usually think birds such as geese and ducks.
If pushed, you might add humpback whales, starlings, reindeer, caribou and African wildebeest. However many more species migrate, including many species of butterflies (notably the Monarch butterfly which travel from North America to the central mountainous regions of Mexico to overwinter in the colder months).However you might not think of bats. I certainly didn't, so I was intrigued to not the news that record for a bat migration was broken in 2022. The original record was 1.254 miles (2,018km) set in 2021 by a Nathusius Pipistrelle that had flown from a location near to Heathrow Airport in England to a location in Western Russia, only to be killed by a local cat.
The new record holder is another of the same species, which flew from a location in Russia to the French alpine village of Lully (a distance of 1,864 miles (3,000km)) .... ironically this record breaker was also killed upon arrival, this time by drowning in a water tank.
These epic migrations were something of a surprise to scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences, who had previously thought that the bats only migrated to South-eastern Europe (the Balkans).
