Pakistan has been playing with fire for decades .... and people playing with fire always get burnt in the end. On the one hand, Pakistan's been promoting the Taliban inside Afghanistan, to keep the country destabilised, but on the other, the Pakistani army is increasingly finding itself  fighting a war against the Taliban inside Pakistan.

Ever since General Zia Ul Haq Islamised the country, its been sliding into a supine acceptance of Sharia law as the only legal and moral framework for the country, whilst becoming increasingly a hard-line Taliban ridden and intolerant society, where women's rights are going backwards .... but we have a saying in the West which is that you reap what you sow.

Doctor Shakil Afridi was charged with treason, and sentenced to 33 years in jail under the 'tribal courts' system. Apparently he wasn't even allowed to defend himself in court while he was prosecuted for gathering information for the American Central Intelligence Agency, used in order to track down Osama Bin Laden in his hiding place in Abbottabad Pakistan.

The Americans, who later confirmed that the good Doctor had aided them, said that he "was not in any way treasonous towards Pakistan, ... he was somebody who was helping to go after terrorism".

Our governments are liars when they claim Pakistan is on our side, its not, it supports the bad guys, and always has. we should cease giving them any aid, and watch them crash and burn when the terrorist topple their corrupt military and ISI.

Addendum: In a bizarre twist the Pakistani authorities now state that Dr Afridi was in fact only convicted for having links to a banned group, by providing support and medical treatment to members of the militant group, Lashkar-e-Islam.

NB: To-date no one in Pakistan has been charged or investigated for aiding Osama Bin Laden in his long stay in Pakistan, yet there was obviously much 'official' as well as 'unofficial' connivance in his ability to live in Abbottabad. 

Growth And Decay

According to the International Monetary Fund, Asia and the Sub Continent are the growth engines of the new world economy. However even there, some are performing better than others. For instance Pakistan's economy grew last year by 2.4% last year according to the IMF. These are figures that the moribund economies of the UK and other European countries would do anything for.

But, and there's always a 'butt' (hah ha!) in Pakistan, the required rate to keep unemployment from rising is at least 7% pa. As it is, 2.4% is actually one of the lowest in the region with the other 'players' India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh all performing far better.

Even with this growth rate, Pakistan's political and economic problems continue, with its structural problems just increasing - for instance in a country of 180 million, less than 1% of people pay income tax. Out of even that low benchmark, billions of rupees of the government tax revenue never even make it into the treasury coffers because of waste and corruption. Industrial production and exports are hampered by crippling bureaucracy, bribery, and energy shortages, often leading to violent protests.

Pakistanis - Up To Their Necks In It - As Usual

If anything the state sector is hampered even more by these and other issues, and the flagship public sector enterprises such as Pakistan International Airlines and Pakistan Railways, are all failing due to chronic mismanagement and blatant inefficiencies .... cronyism in job distribution is rife.

When you add in the political chaos with disputes between the civilian government and the armed forces, the continual rise of the Taliban (aided by the military intelligence ISI), and rapid and uncontrolled population growth, and it appears that even the signs of economic growth, just can't hide the whiff of continued political and social decay.

Hell Has Another Resident ..... Osama Bin Laden Dead

This morning came the news that Osama Bin Laden, leader and mentor of the Al Qaeda terrorist ideology was killed by US Special forces yesterday .....

No doubt Islamists the world over will be mourning 'another martyr', and in Mosques 'sermons' will praise him, which just shows how sick Islamists are .... he was a mass murderer who preached an ideology that stated that 'civilians, including women and children, are legitimate targets of Jihad'.

Just Telling It As It Is ..... Cameron In "Hot Water"

Pakistan has got itself all upset because David Cameron was in India when he made a very pointed remake about elements in Pakistan supporting the Taliban in attacks on coalition troops in Afghanistan and civilians in the UK.

Mr Cameron made the comments to reporters after a speech in the southern Indian city of Bangalore on Wednesday. He said: "We should be very, very clear with Pakistan that we want to see a strong, stable and democratic Pakistan. We cannot tolerate in any sense the idea that this country is allowed to look both ways and is able, in any way, to promote the export of terror, whether to India or whether to Afghanistan or anywhere else in the world."

Of course the Taliban supporters in Pakistan instantly went ballistic, as though this accusation about Pakistan's ISI intelligence service funding and protecting the Taliban was in anyway 'new' news ..... in fact many of us blogger's have made this point, and in fact this blog raised the matter as recently as June the 13th .

But perhaps more importantly, Prime Minister Brown (a man who rarely said anything non PC in public .... well except once LOL), said that three-quarters of the most serious terror plots being investigated by UK authorities, have links to Pakistan.

So why was there no fuss then? Ah, well in the Islamic state of paranoia that drives the Pakistani military, there is no worse sin than that of playing the 'India card' in politics. They believe, contrary to all the evidence, that Hindu India, is fuelling Islamic terror attacks on it from Afghanistan, when in fact its there own Madrassas and the ISI (Inter Service Intelligence), that are the driving force for the Taliban in both Afghanistan, Pakistan and elsewhere in the world.

The men who really know what games the ISI is up to are Lt-Gen Shuja Pasha (the current head of ISI) and his predecessor Lt. Gen. Nadeem Taj.
