As discussed in other posts, the Germans are now at the forefront of Europe under Mother Merkel's tender leadership. So apparently the Fourth Reich, is now not just content with making the EU dance to the Germans drumming, on policies such as immigration and economic policy, its now throwing its weight about in relation to what power sources its neighbours can use.
The Belgians (and I admit I didn't know this), are a nuclear power user, with a few nuclear power stations. The problem is that they are getting old, and in need of replacement, but the Belgium government can neither afford to do this, nor can it manage without them. Two of them (the Doel 3 and Tihange 2 reactors), on the German Dutch border were closed due to safety concerns in 2012, but reopened last year .... however the Germans (and also the Dutch), are not convinced their original safety concerns have been totally resolved, and have now asked the Belgium's to close them both down again.
This has not gone down well with the Belgians who perhaps not unnaturally are not keen to do so, and have rejected the German request, saying there is no need "from a nuclear safety point of view". .... no doubt they will though.
Because in the New Europa, the Germans pay the piper, and so they call the tune.
