.... was raided by two bears on the 12th of September 2023.
The doughnuts proved just as irresistible to the bears, as they are to the humans who also gorge on them. The driver usually left his back doors open when making a delivery to the store, but on this occasion a female bear and her cub, wandered up and into the van. They then spent around 20 minutes in the van and ate everything in there.The bears enjoyed the doughnuts and other pastries, totally ignoring all the banging on the side of the van by the driver and store manager that was aimed at scaring them away, when that failed, Shelly Deano the store manageress, called out the base security, and they sounded loud sirens that were intended to scare away the bears, she said.
Eventually when even the bears couldn't eat (or perhaps find) anymore, they wandered out of the van, but in no rush, they stood in front of the convenience store and the gas station for a while, before heading into the woods. As you might expect in Alaska, bears are not unknown around the base buildings, so staff and personnel take care when its dark, and empty trash bins in pairs for added safety as bears are notoriously attracted to trash dumpsters and bins.
Alaska Department of Fish and Game state that "Keeping bears away from human food is perhaps the most important thing we can do to prevent conflicts and confrontations between bears and people."
