.... a study in Otago, New Zealand, found that just 6 minutes strenuous exercise a day could help fight against a number of the ravages of old age.
They have published a study which shows that short bursts of activity that cause you to work up a sweat, boosts the production of a protein essential for the brains ability to learn and retain memory and fight the onset of Alzheimers.
This protein also reduces the risks from other age related illnesses such as Parkinsons disease. The molecule is Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and it was increased in the body in all the test subjects who performed just 6 minutes of vigorous cycling. In fact it increased by up to fivefold in the tested people. BDNF is found in the brain, spinal cord, gut, and other tissues and in the brain, it's expressed in most cortical regions and the hippocampus.
Physical and Chemical interventions such as exercise and antidepressants, can enhance BDNF expression in the brain. Intermittent fasting, such as caloric restriction and time-restricted eating, may also increase BDNF levels but that is still being studied.
Studies of BDNF in mice showed it boosted cognitive functions by helping nerve cells (neurons) survive and grow, and is important for learning and memory: So its believed that it has the same effect on humans and thus could save your memory.
