.... but in my defence, I would add that I was living in a fair bit of poverty in a one parent household .... so trying to escape that condition by any means, was at least in part a reason to try drugs. I stopped those kinds of drugs as soon as I took a job (alcohol and tobacco remained on the agenda!).
I mention all this, because during those experimental years, I heard all sorts of theories about changed realities, and alternate states of minds, during chemical experiments of the brain altering kind, such as magic mushrooms and LSD. Shamans abilities to travel to another dimension whilst in a drugged state, were often casually banded about as a 'truth or fact' .... although with little empirical evidence in those pre-Internet days.
But I thought this nonsense had died with the early drug explorer Alice, or even the end of the hippy generation of Timothy Leary, Allen Ginsburg, and William S. Burroughs, however I was apparently wrong. A Colorado based start-up company named 'Medicinal Mindfulness' has requested approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to test the properties of certain psychedelic drugs. In particular the drug N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (what a mouthful, aka DMT).
The reason for this interest is that a single dose of DMT reportedly gives users an intense 5 - 10 minute ecstatic experience, in which they claim to 'enter what seems to be a different plane or dimension' .... now where I have I heard that before? .... Oh yes, as the excuse for every mind altering drug ever created or used. The blurb continues that while in these 'different planes or dimensions' the users report seeing what 'psychonaut' Terence McKenna refers to as "machine elves." ... well it makes a change from little pixies or pink elephants!
Anyways, undaunted, the company wants to launch a study called 'DMTx' using a continuous drip feed of the drug to provoke a longer time period under the influence (stretching it to hours), with the aim of examining whether users in different rooms or spaces, can communicate to each other in the DMT provoked 'different planes or dimensions' .... thus proving that they have travelled out of our reality and are in a shared alternate dimension.
...... watch this space (or some inner space) ... well you get the idea.
