I have never owned a dog ....

.... we were always cat people in my family of long ago, and I have never had a pet since becoming an adult (didn't fit in with my lifestyle or relationships and now I'm too lazy).
But I understand from many dog owners that when dogs are let loose on 'walkies' they can sometimes bring back some unwanted surprises. I have been told by owners that this can range from dead or decomposed animals and birds, to occasionally live animals or birds as well as other even more disgusting things. In fact such is the range of these 'finds' that the website GardenandGun.com actually ran an article in April 2024 on these 'treasures'. This listed such items as a jelly doughnut, a man’s bathing suit with keys in the pocket, a lizard, a full-grown possum, a dead bird, a rat’s tail and a beaver carcass, as well as other similar delights.

But none of them matched a man walking his dog near North Mount Loretto State Forest in Staten Island, New York in March 2023, when his dog proudly returned from some jaunt with a human hand in its mouth. The police were called and after a cursory look around the neighbourhood for a corpse returned the hand to the forensics lab for fingerprinting. The hand was matched to a 63 year old woman who had died in 2011.
She had been buried in Resurrection Cemetery a local cemetery, which was located around a mile away from where the dog had returned with the hand to its owner. Investigations showed that the poor ladies grave had been disturbed by an internment in a neighbouring plot, however there was no confirmed explanation as to how her hand had ended up a mile away to be found by the dog, however animals are the most likely explanation.
Resurrection Cemetery later confirmed that the hand would be "respectfully re-interred. We take this matter with great seriousness and will conduct an investigation," it said. Unfortunately the dog walker and the dog were not named by the police but it would have been nice if the dog had been called Brisket, or Holmes or some such name.
