... it may be because the Guinness Book of records honours the successful breeder.
However as these Chillies are virtually inedible without having medical support nearby, its more of an academic exercise, than a culinary matter. The latest breeder to be recognised for this dubious feat, is the appropriately named Ed Currie of South Carolina who taken the Guinness Book of records title for his Pepper X strain in October 2023.
Chilli Pepper strength is measured in Scoville Heat Units and Pepper X registered a hellish 2.7 million Heat Units per Chilli. A Jalapeño chilli measure 8,000 Scoville Heat Units as a comparison. Mr Currie has previous form for this particular Guinness Record, as he was the existing holder with his 'Carolina Reaper' chilli.
But in a case of biter bit, Mr Currie ate a whole Pepper X and was almost immediately stricken with severe pain and stomach cramps for over an hour ..... good!!
