.... A pedestrian? A cyclist? A bus? .... evidence from crashes and accidents suggest, not necessarily.
Vision Zero Vancouver (VZV) a road safety advocacy group in Canada certainly believed that car drivers didn't always see other road users. So after a series of near misses between drivers and pedestrians on the road crossings in the city, they decided to rethink what gets a drivers attention.
And using some out the box thinking they created the "Pedestrian Brick Crossing System" ..... this was putting two baskets of rubber bricks on either side of the pedestrian crossing on the Granville Island crossing (a particularly busy crossing). The idea was that a pedestrian picked up a brick on one side and while crossing the road, held or brandished the brick towards oncoming cars.
It worked a treat .... car drivers immediately noticed people waving bricks at their vehicles and and slowed and stopped appropriately. VZV said that when people with bricks are crossing a road "suddenly they have no problem seeing them and stopping!"
