| Finniss River Floodplain Infested With Salt-water Crocs |
..... was attacked by a crocodile at a water hole (known locally as a billabong), when it grabbed his foot and the creature then shook him "like a rag doll, and took off into the water" pulling him in as well.
But Mr Devereux was able to bite the crocodiles eyelid, and as he jerked back, the crocodile let go. "The water had receded, and it was down to this dirty water in the middle. I took two steps and the dirty bastard latched onto my right foot," he said. "I leapt away and took off with great steps up to where my car was. He chased me for a bit, maybe four metres, but then stopped."
Mr Devereux's brother drove him the 80 miles to Royal Darwin Hospital where he spent around a month recovering. "The biggest problem was having to clear out all the bad bacteria [from the wound] ... so all of the billabong water full of mud, goose shit, duck shit, and crocodile teeth marks. It was opened up bad and over 10 days in a row, and they had to flush it." .... "It all happened in about eight seconds I reckon. If he [the crocodile] had bitten me somewhere else it would have been different."
As crocodiles are protected animals (after being over hunted in the past - numbers have boomed since), the crocodile was later captured and released into another area ..... Australia has an incredibly large number of dangerous animals, for instance 66 types of venomous snakes, as well as poisonous spiders, crocodiles and various deadly marine life .... thankfully over here. we have just one fairly venomous snake, the Adder.
