Its The Words Not The Spirit

Baptism is a serious thing in the Christian world .....

.... it is a Christian sacrament and an actual requirement for admission to the church and the start of a new life in faith ending in the Kingdom of Heaven.

It is usually accompanied by the words "I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit". This has been the form since around 200 AD with infant baptism still practised in most Protestant, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic churches. Other protestant splinter denominations may practice adult baptism e.g Anabaptists.

So when on the 17th June 2021 it was found that a Catholic priest in Arizona had been incorrectly using the words "We baptise you ...." since sometime in 1995, there was a massive shock wave and scandal. It was confirmed that this slip really ,mattered, with theologians pointing out that the term "I" was Jesus, embodied in the form of the priest, who was admitting the applicant to the church. The term "we" did not create the required transformation that is intended by the ritual.

The Catholic Church confirmed that all baptisms carried out by Pastor Andres Arango prior to the 17th of June were invalid ..... the exact number was not disclosed, but it was likely thousands in both the USA (California and Arizona) and Brazil (where he did some work), and Father Andres Arango resigned from the post of Pastor/Parish priest.

“It saddens me to learn that I have performed invalid baptisms throughout my ministry as a priest by regularly using an incorrect formula. I deeply regret my error and how this has affected numerous people in your parish and elsewhere. With the help of the Holy Spirit and in communion with the Diocese of Phoenix I will dedicate my energy and full time ministry to help remedy this and heal those affected.”

The Diocese of Phoenix said that he remains a priest in good standing and was not disqualified from his ministry, but that all recipients of invalid baptisms will have to be baptised again and might also have to receive other sacraments (such as confirmations, first Holy Communions, and even marriages), as if for the first time.

You can imagine the the divorces etc that may come from this slip ......
