Religion Rules ... Okay

There are only two countries in the world that actually ban the teaching of the theory of evolution to children  ..... until recently there was only one, Saudi Arabia, where its totally banned and only one Saudi 12th-grade textbook mentions evolution by name. It claims that Charles Darwin has "...denied Allah's creation of humanity" .....

RIP Evolutionary Theory In Turkey And Saudi Arabia ......

.... but now, the increasingly Islamic state of Turkey, has joined it in banning the theory being taught in schools.

This is part of elected President for life, Recep Tayyip Erdogan's stated goal of raising 'pious generations' in Turkey. Alongside this ban of the subject of evolution in schools - it will still be allowed for discussion in Universities - the government have also included a decrease in the amount of time allocated to the life of Turkey's secularist founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

However the fact that only these two countries ban the teaching of the theory of evolution in schools, while technically true, is not the whole picture on the teaching of the theory being under threat. In Pakistan for example, the teaching of the theory of evolution is not practised in the madrassa's - religious schools that mostly teach the Quran by rote - and rarely in state schools. Although like Turkey, its still taught in some University classes.

This is the sort of evidence creationists present on YouTube ... Humans and Dinosaurs together. Laughable Fakes.

Serbia nearly banned its inclusion unless creationism was also taught as science as well ... but after a week of protests, the government minister backed down. A legal challenge to the teaching of the theory in Russia was also defeated in two courts. Poland and Romania have seen similar public challenges to the inclusion of the theory of evolution in school curriculum's, but they have been defeated.

A Polish Member of the European Parliament, Maciej Giertych, has opposed the teaching of the theory of evolution, and has even claimed that "in every culture there are indications that we remember dinosaurs. The Scots have Nessie; we Poles have the Wawel dragon"..... so there you are then.

Of course the biggest challenges to the teaching of the theory of evolution have been in the USA, which even before the infamous the Scopes Trial of 1925 often blocked its teaching .... I have discussed the theory of evolution a few times on this blog, and so I won't bother to try and summarise the ever changing position of its place in state schools in each US state. Suffice it to say, that under President Trump, more challenges to its teaching by creationists are likely to be mounted.
