There have therefore been a number of terms to describe the states humans get into while getting inebriated and after over indulging.
The English language has many such terms from rhyming slang such 'Brahms and Lizt' (Rhyming slang for pissed), via 'Pissed as a Newt' to 'Drunk as a Lord' and many, many more ....

..... so here's a few foreign language terms related to the party season to give you a better range when it all kicks off on New Years Eve .....
- BACKPFEIFENGESICHT - German: A face that needs a punch!!
- KUMERSPECK - German: Literally 'grief bacon', but getting fat via emotional eating - 'comfort eating' in English.
- SCHNAPSLEICHE - German: Someone so paralytic that they have passed out.
- ABBIOCCO - Italian: Feeling drowsy after a heavy meal and alcohol.
- AKIHI - Hawaiian: Asking for directions and forgetting them immediately e.g. Asking where the toilets are while drunk at the office Xmas party.
- UTEPILS - Norwegian: Sitting outside in the sunshine and getting drunk.
- FARPOTSHKET - Yiddish/Jewish: Trying to fix something that was partly broken, and breaking it completely - like that vase at someone's house party that you knocked over, then dropped again.
- JAYUS - Indonesian: Telling a Joke so badly that its funny.
- GIGIL - Filipino: The overwhelming urge to squeeze something cute.
- YAOURT - French: Singing along to a song while not knowing the words, so filling in with nonsense noises or words that are not really the lyrics.
- MANGATA - Swedish: The reflection of the moon on a body of water .... many possibilities with this one ... men walking home with a skin-full of beer will have seen this on their own created body of water!

That's a good list of words, quite specialised unless you get regularly plastered! You've claimed Backpfeifengesicht so I'll have JAYUS - doubly specialised I imagine.
ReplyDeleteThe french have another musical adjective, SOUPE for they type of song that drones on without a tune.
There are many every day things and actions which lack words to describe them and conveniently a host of words hanging around on sign posts not doing much : The Meaning of Liff pairs them up in an alternative Dictionary. One of the few that I remember is Cotterstock (n.): A piece of wood used to stir paint and thereafter stored uselessly in the shed in perpetuity.
Having spent the last couple of weeks fulking behind the front door, and despite being a bit duntish this morning, after an evening, where I was perhaps a bit of a gignog, (certainly when a least one joke was saucillo).

Speaking of Rhymneys, The Mamas & The Papas apparently sing "pretend to pray" in California dreamin, I'd always heard "began to pray"...
