Billy With Mates |
.... the hunt was on for more such pictures. The attribution of an image of the said Mr Bonney, playing crotchet, was confirmed by many experts earlier this year .... its valued at $5m!
Now we have another tin type which has attributed as Billy, by using facial recognition software, and which I have cleaned up for posting.
The main point of interest of this latest image, dated as being taken in 1880, is that it features both Billy the Kid, and his killer Sheriff Patrick Floyd Garrett. They were of course famously friends, before Garret changed sides and became a lawman, as the sheriff of Lincoln County, New Mexico.
Billy the Kid (second from left) and Pat Garrett (far right) |
Sheriff Garrett is remembered for gunning down the outlaw in 1881, after he had escaped from being hung for killing a sheriff .... and thus a legend was made of a teen psychopath.
Everyone really did wear hats back then! I appreciate the enhanced version as I'm sure they would have years ago when they only had black and white.
ReplyDeleteIn the film A Million Ways to Die in The West, they make a point about photographic etiquette and smiling - it was frowned upon ;-)
I enhanced both versions because the original is somewhat tattier. Interestingly no one seems to know which way round the picture goes ... it's displayed both ways on the news sites.
DeleteI didn't know about the smile thing.
Try and find a period photograph of smiling Victorians...
DeleteI suspect that in the early days, not only was photography a serious business but also sustaining a smile during the long exposure times was difficult and embarrassing.
I wasn't disputing it, and indeed I would have guessed that with exposures of minutes most people found keeping still difficult without smiling. However the first Exposure Tables were published in 1844 and it wasn't until 1888 that more refined timings caught up with better film emulsions developed after 1871.

Thanks for comment. I would be pleased if you could put a bit of context to it. Are you suggesting that Billy the Kid never was NOT shot by Pat Garrett?
