Its amazing sometime how fast new technology captures the public's imagination .....

Young England Annual 1911/1912 |
After all, computing devices were invented during the second world war, but never really entered the general public's consciousness until
the 1980's.
|
The Wright Flyer 1903 ..... |
The Wright Brothers only flew their fixed wing, heavier than air, plane
the Wright Flyer in 1903, and the Kitty Hawk in 1904, so you would think
this feat, though astounding, would take some time to sink in to the
public's imagination and popular culture.
So when in a charity shop I came across a copy of YOUNG ENGLAND, An ILLUSTRATED MAGAZINE for BOYS THROUGHOUT THE ENGLISH SPEAKING WORLD. WITH MANY ILLUSTRATIONS. THIRTY - THIRD ANNUAL 1911 - 1912
(The Pilgram Press). I hardly expected much by way of science.

The Typical Colour Plate Inside The Cover ..... |
For the most part, leafing through it brought no surprise ... tales of derring-do in the bushlands of Canada and Africa .... All the Boys Own type tales you would expect from an Empire book from before the First World War. Also as usual, only the first inside cover image was a coloured plate .... so I was about to put it back down when my eye was caught by this story header,
|
The Mysterious Aeroplane ...... |
The
MYSTERIOUS AEROPLANE A STORY OF THE SOUTH DOWNS with an illustration of what can only be a representation of the
Wright Model A flyer type of plane.
|
The Wright Model A Flying Machine |
Now given that this book was written just seven years since those first faltering steps into the sky, its technology appearance in a boys adventure book is really quite remarkable, but then again they were only three years away from the first fighter and bomber planes, so perhaps not that remarkable.
