| Adder Attacks Rare In UK |
... since the extinction of the wolf and bear, we are largely free of larger predators with perhaps the recently resettled wild boar as the only large wild animal that could maybe kill you.
In fact more people are killed by cows than any other larger animals in the countryside. We have few venomous creatures: The Yellow-tailed scorpion which arrived in the 19th century. Some ticks that can transmit Lyme Disease, and the Adder Snake (which can kill in very rare circumstances).
However, this is nothing compared with the continent of Australia, where residents face a large number of animals, snakes, spiders, plants and for all I know vegetables that can injure or kill people. So it was somewhat ironic Chris Lang an emigre to Australia, returned to Cornwall, England, to visit family. Whilst on the a walk along the coast, Mr Lang was suddenly bit by an Adder. The venom caused him to collapse, and his leg swelled up. The leg then tingled and went numb.
The attack required a stay in hospital (he was lucky to get in one in the UK!!), and two doses of anti-venom to recover. Mr Lang, who has never been bitten by any of the myriad of dangerous creatures in Melbourne, Australia, said that "the irony of the situation has not been lost on me."

Moderation is on for older posts to stop spamming and comments that are off topic or inappropriate from being posted .... comments are reviewed within 48 hours. I don't block normal comments that are on topic and not inappropriate. Vexatious comments that may cause upset to other commentators, or that are attempting to espouse a particular wider political view, are reviewed before acceptance. But a certain amount of debate around a post topic is accepted, as long as it remains generally on topic and is not an attempt to become sounding board for some other cause.
Final decision on all comments is held by the blog author and is final.
